Virginia “Ginny” Alene (McMillion) Free

Virginia “Ginny” Alene (McMillion) Free, 87, went home to be with the Lord on Saturday, May 6, 2023 from her home after a few years of declining health.

She was born May 19, 1935 in Jefferson, Ohio to the late Hubert and Marjorie (Havens) McMillion. She was a 1953 graduate of Jefferson High School.

She married Kenneth “Ken” Ivan Free on October 2, 1954, and continued their union in Christ for the next 68 years until her death.

Ken and Ginny were founding members of Faith Baptist Church in Perry, Ohio. As an accomplished pianist, Ginny was the pianist at Faith Baptist Church in Perry, Faith Baptist Church in Kettering, Ohio, Coshocton Baptist Temple and Victory Baptist Church in Coshocton.  In addition, she taught many children over the years how to play the piano.  She loved old hymns and Southern Gospel music, which brought her comfort until her death.

Ginny worked in her younger years as a secretary at Union Carbide near Ashtabula and the Cellarius & Hilmer architectural firm in Cincinnati.

In 1969, Ken and Ginny moved to Coshocton after purchasing the former Gibson Funeral Home. She worked beside her husband for the next 50 years until her retirement.  During this time, they served the Coshocton community by providing funeral service, ambulance service until 1974 while gaining her certification as an EMT and CPR instructor, and started what is now Free’s Medical to provide medical equipment and supplies.  Ginny will be most remembered for the service, support and care provided to grieving families.

Ginny also served the community in the Pink Ladies of the Coshocton County Memorial Hospital and was active in the Coshocton Chapters of the YWCA, WCTU, and American Heart Association. On January 24, 1983, she was awarded the Service to Mankind Award by the Coshocton Area Sertoma Club.

In addition to her husband Ken, Ginny is survived by her sons, Scott (Carmelita) Free of Jackson Heights, NY and Todd (Holly) Free of New Philadelphia; six grandchildren, Austin (Tiffany) Free of Astoria, NY, Julia Free of Auch, France, Meredith (Wesley) Tenney-Free of Princeton, NJ, Aaron Free of Westerville, Drs. Brandon (Taylor) Free of Cuyahoga Falls, and Cameron (Stephanie) Free of Stow.

In addition to her parents Hubert and Marjorie McMillion, she was preceded in death by her sister Doris (Wallace) Throop and her brother Pfc. Charles McMillion, who was killed in the Vietnam War in 1969.

Friends may call at the Free Funeral Home, 788 S. Second Street, Coshocton, Ohio on Friday, May 12, 2023 from 4:00 PM to 6:00 PM.  Funeral services will be held at the First Baptist Church of Jefferson, 85 W Jefferson St, Jefferson, Ohio on Saturday, May 13, 2023 at 1:00 PM with calling hours one hour prior to the service at the church. Pastor Don Snow and Pastor Rick Havens will officiate and burial will follow at Oakdale Cemetery in Jefferson.
