New staff members tour Coshocton

| August 15, 2023
New staff members at Coshocton City Schools were taken for a ride on Aug. 14. Retired Coshocton High School teachers Ann Leppla and Marty Bickel started this adventure tour several years ago to get new hires at the school familiar with the city.
We have done this for a long time but we didn’t for a few years because of COVID,” Leppla said. “Our superintendent was our first tour person. We took him in Marty’s car and it was just the three of us but now with everybody, we take them on bus tours and it takes a while. We take them by city hall  and we’re going to call the mayor, so he can come out. I just checked with him yesterday. The mayor Mark Mills was one of our former students. Principals and others used to be our students, but we both had the mayor in class.”
“These teachers and principals, we’ve had in class,” Bickel said. “It’s really kind of nice. We take them by the hospital to show them urgent care and show them places to eat, dentists, eye doctors offices.”
“As they get on the bus we give them a welcome packet with all kinds of information, maps and things to do. It’s a welcome to Coshocton thing,” Leppla said. “The chamber of commerce makes them for us. It is very helpful for all the things you need to know. If you need something this will tell you where to go.”

New hires at Coshocton Elementary and high school include bus drivers, custodians, cafeteria workers, aids, teachers, administrators, a lot of different people. They are going to take a bus ride with the new superintendent Mark Kowalski driving the bus. Kowalski is also a certified CDL  driver.
“Marty Bickel  and I are going to give him the scoop. We  are going to take them all around town, all over the place and back here for lunch,” Leppla said. “We are going to show them where heated hill is. We are going down Cambridge Road, Main Street, out by WTNS, the post office, out Third Street to see the big old homes, the Pomerene house. We are going out to Lake Park, out Second Street and come back to the school that way. We’ll see Kids America. Several new hires are from out of town and they have no idea about Coshocton. Some are local kids who think they know everything about Coshocton but after we are finished with them they will think, ‘Oh my gosh!'”
