4-H shooting sports program teaches many lessons

| January 4, 2024

The National 4-H Shooting Sports Program gives young people an opportunity to learn marksmanship, safe and responsible use of firearms, principles of hunting and archery, and more.

This program helps to develop life skills, self-worth, and conservation ethics. It’s also important because two thirds of the homes in the United States have firearms.

“We are a pretty rural area, so I think we are pretty familiar with that,” said Jenny Strickler, 4-H educator for Coshocton County. “But having that exposure to safe and responsible handling is what is vital to preventing accidents both in and out of the home. So that is our goal in the shooting sports program to teach that proper use. Core concepts are to stress safety, decision making, and personal responsibility.”

Archery is popular and there are rifle and shotgun classes. “They are pretty popular classes and safety is the number one stressor and how to properly use firearms,” Strickler said. “The instructors have had statewide training. They are certified 4-H volunteers, they have had background checks and an interview process, so they have gone through extensive training to lead those classes so that everyone feels comfortable and safe in those environments.”
