COTC students benefit from redesigned engineering degree

| July 28, 2021

Central Ohio Technical College (COTC) graduates will now get an even stronger competitive edge in the workplace thanks to the college’s newly redesigned general engineering technology degree.

The Associate of Applied Science in Engineering Technology offers a quick on-ramp to an in-demand career, excellent salary and advancement opportunities. It’s just the kind of education that many recent high school graduates and underemployed workers want and need to fast-track into this growing career field. And COTC’s program was designed with input from central Ohio employers to specifically meet the engineering needs of local industries. That means COTC grads get an inside track with hiring managers and immediate employability in a wide range of engineering technology roles in a variety of industries.

“Over the past year, COTC gathered input about how to structure our engineering program directly from the most important source — central Ohio industries,” said COTC President John M. Berry, PhD. “What we learned was clear — local employers need associate degree graduates with a wide range of general engineering skills.”

In COTC’s two-year program, graduates master a broad set of highly sought foundational engineering skills, including engineering and occupational safety, computer applications, engineering graphics, 3-D modeling, industrial controls and automation, engineering materials, principles of machining, automation in manufacturing, quality control and assurance, alternative and renewable energy sources, and fluid mechanics and power. All graduates also complete an engineering technology capstone course and a cooperative experience with a local industry.

With COTC’s hands-on classes and labs, engineering graduates gain real-world, transferable skills in multiple areas, making them well positioned for roles as engineering technicians who design, implement and support a wide range of engineering processes.

Engineering technicians are among Ohio’s top jobs, with associate degree holders in Ohio earning a median annual salary from $55,000 to $63,000 according to Ohio’s Top Jobs list. And with demand for engineering jobs in Ohio projected to continue to grow, it’s a great time to start earning an engineering technology degree.
