Despite the dreary day, a large crowd gathered in the junior fair arena on Sunday, Oct. 3 to cheer for their favorite dog. Four dogs competed in several classes, including showmanship, obedience and even a costume contest.

Allie Norman, 17, was competing for the last time with her Shetland sheep dog, Minnie. This was the fifth time the two of them had competed at the fair. “I’ve been working with her since she was a puppy. She’s six now. She’s such a beautiful breed and I love showing her off.” Norman said she liked watching dog shows and decided she wanted to teach a dog tricks.

“The hardest part is that she is clingy. She doesn’t like to be too far from me, so having her sit and stay and wait for me is really hard for her. It’s fun to teach her things. I like being able to have her outside and not on a leash. I can trust her to stay close.”  Norman was the Queen of Hearts and Minnie was the ace of hearts.  The pair won several awards.

Nine year old Kenzie Roach was competing in the dog show for the first time. She brought her silky terrier named Peppy. She said she decided to compete in the dog show because her brother did it. For the costume contest, Roach was dressed like Dorothy from the Wizard of Oz and Peppy was the Cowardly Lion. “My mom thought he would look cute dressed like that.”

Roach said she would compete again. “It was hard getting him to stay turned like he was supposed to.” Roach and Peppy took home several ribbons and a trophy.

The crowd grew even more as children came to sign up for the Kiddie Tractor Pull that was sponsored by the Ridgewood FFA. More than 50 children signed up to compete to see who could peddle their tractor the farthest. The strain of trying to peddle with the weight showed in their faces as the children tried to pull the weight to the end. Trophies were given out for first place in each of the classes, along with ribbons for second – fifth place and participation ribbons for all.
