Marilyn Joan (Johnston) Shaffer-Gonter
Marilyn Joan (Johnston) Shaffer-Gonter, 85, of Coshocton, passed away on Sunday, Oct. 10, 2021. She was born Aug. 22, 1936, in Conesville to the late Richard W. Johnston and Letha M. Ford.
Marilyn worked as a title clerk at the Coshocton County Title Department, and also at Mission Auto and retired after many years. She was a member of Tyndall United Methodist Church for over 60 years and enjoyed reading her Bible, praying for her family and friends, and reading daily devotions. She also enjoyed reading romance novels, thrillers, biographies, and self-help books. Marilyn was a member of a card club and bowling league in earlier years, and was also a seamstress who worked on wedding gowns and making repairs. She was described by her family as being extremely friendly and never met a stranger.
Marilyn is survived by her five daughters, Krista Diane (Bob) Garrett, Kendra A. (Jim) Kirker, Kathy J. Shaffer of Rome, Georgia, Kim L. (Norm) Edie, and Karen M. (Richard) Good. She is also survived by 10 grandchildren, 22 great-grandchildren, and five great-great grandchildren. Marilyn is also survived by a brother-in-law, Charles Spang, and sister-in-law, Novella Johnston, and many other extended family members.
Along with her parents, Marilyn was preceded in death by her loving husband of 53 years, Asa Lloyd Shaffer, Jr. She was also preceded in death by her second husband, Paul Gonter who passed away on May 7, 2020. Marilyn was also preceded in death by her siblings, Delmar Johnston, Eleanor Thomas, and Lola Spang, as well as a granddaughter, Tonya Delafeld.
Calling hours will be held at Given-Dawson-Paisley Funeral Home from 9-10:30 a.m. on Friday, Oct. 15, 2021. A funeral service will follow at 10:30 a.m. officiated by Evangelist Sheldon Mencer. Burial will take place at Tyndall Church cemetery following the service.
