RVHS students putting on character breakfast
Pancakes and sausage will be served Saturday, Oct. 30 from 9 a.m. to noon in the cafeteria at River View High School. Come enjoy breakfast for a donation and show off your Halloween costume. Get your face painted and take selfies with cartoon characters.
The River View Music Department will host the character breakfast to offset the $20,000 in transportation costs for its June 2022 trip to Disney World. There are 61 students, five directors and nine parents registered for the trip.
“All students who are going on the Disney trip are expected to help run the pancake breakfast,” said Dawn Anglin, choir director at RVHS. “Other students in the department who are not going to Disney tend to help out as well, just because it’s a fun event.”
The opportunity to go to Disney takes place every four years.
“Both the band and choir are required to submit a video of our groups performing within the last year,” Anglin said. “Disney then decides if they will accept our groups to perform in their park. Not every group is accepted, so it is an honor to have the opportunity to showcase the talents of our students from Warsaw, Ohio. In addition to performing, both the band and choir attend a workshop with Disney professionals who teach our kids about musicianship but also about hard work, dedication and professionalism. These experiences require an extra fee but are well worth the investment.”
March band director Keith Watson said the trip gives them the opportunity to travel to another part of the country, be rewarded for their hard work, bond with friends and see other career opportunities in music.
“There is another world full of possibilities outside of our county and the state of Ohio,” Watson said. “The enjoyment you get from traveling somewhere and returning can make you appreciate home even more.”
Anglin agreed with him on the importance of travel.
“It’s good to see and meet people from other cultures and who have a different life experience,” she said. “As Mark Twain famously said, ‘Travel is fatal to prejudice, bigotry and narrow-mindedness, and many of our people need it sorely on these accounts. Broad, wholesome, charitable views of men and things cannot be acquired by vegetating in one little corner of the earth all one’s lifetime.’”
