Dorothy Ellen (Van Voorhis) Hothem

Dorothy Ellen (Van Voorhis) Hothem of Coshocton passed away peacefully on Tuesday, Dec. 2, 2021 at 101 years of age.

Born Aug. 20, 1920 in Fresno, she was the daughter of the late Clark and Rose (Hahn) Van Voorhis.

After her mother’s death, Dorothy put her education on hold to help her father care and raise her younger siblings. Later in life she was very proud to go back to school for her GED.

On June 7, 1942, she married the love of her life, Dennis V. Hothem. They were married for 64 years before he passed away in 2006. Dorothy was dedicated to her family, and is survived by their four children: Beatrice “Kay” (John) Hart of Coshocton, Steven D (Diana) Hothem of Troy, Michigan, Douglas C. (Alicia) Hothem of West Lafayette, and Ann D. Hothem of Newcomerstown. She is also survived by four grandchildren, Michelle Hart, Phillip Hart, Brandon Hothem, and Heather (Chad) Nuckles, and two great-grandchildren, Vanessa and Tyler Nuckles. Dorothy is also survived by her sister, Alice Morgan, and sister-in-law Beulah Lautensleger.

Dorothy was preceded in death by her four brothers, Wilson, Francis, Paul, and Harold Van Voorhis, and three sisters, Geraldine Ford, Mary McQueen, and Roselie Niccum. She was also preceded in death by her stepmother, Laura (Marlatt) Van Voorhis.

Dorothy was a true farmer’s wife, milking cows, harvesting crops, and gardening. She was a homemaker that never tired, loved to travel, and quilting was her passion. She was a lifelong member of Plainfield United Methodist Church, a lifelong member of Plainfield/Blue Ridge Grange, a Red Cross Volunteer, a poll worker for many years, a member of the Farm Bureau, a member of West Lafayette Sorosis, a 4-H advisor, a band booster supporter, and enjoyed playing Hausey, bridge, and bingo with her family and friends.

Calling hours will be held at Given-Dawson-Paisley Funeral Home on Thursday, Dec. 9, 2021 from 4-6 p.m. and on Friday, Dec. 10 from 10:30-11 a.m. A funeral service will be held at Given-Dawson-Paisley Funeral Home on Friday, Dec. 10, 2021 at 11 a.m. officiated by Rev. John Armstrong and Evangelist Lloyd Tenney. Burial will follow the funeral service at Coshocton County Memory Gardens.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made in Dorothy’s name to Plainfield United Methodist Church, P.O. Box 415 Plainfield, OH 43836 or to the charity of the donor’s choice.
