Ridgewood wins Ohio STEM Classroom Grant
Ridgewood High School will be awarded $2,500 to expand STEM learning projects through Ohio STEM Learning Network Classroom Grant Program, funded by Battelle. The grants will create sustainable, STEM learning projects to benefit students for years to come.
At Ridgewood, the project, “Time Flies! Creating a Computer Programmed Remote Control Theater Clock,” will have students across multiple disciplines research, design, and build a computer-programmed, Wi-Fi compatible, and remote controlled clock for our upcoming theater production of Cinderella. Students will be designing the clock using the guidelines of theater set design and construction, creating a visually stunning clock and choosing materials for function and aesthetics, and combining many skills to build the clock, including construction design, engineering, woodworking, plastic/metal working, motor work, and problem solving to power the clock. Students will also be working with an Arduino Uno Wifi Rev 2 to create computer code to allow the clock hands to be controlled via Wifi and a custom smartphone app. Through this project, students will be exploring careers in theater tech, theater design, art design, computer science, construction, and engineering. It will involve cooperation, creativity, and cross-curricular instruction. Digital media students will also be documenting the building process and will create a final photo and video presentation.
In total, 151 classrooms across 55 Ohio counties join Ridgewood in winning the award. Classrooms will receive grants of up to $5,000. In total, $687,500 will be awarded. Projects align to one of four focus areas: Community Problem Solving; STEM Career Exploration; Building STEM Mindsets; and Design Thinking and Infrastructure.
