Library staff brings activities to parks
Coshocton Public Library’s Youth Service Coordinator Janice Sycks brought the joy of books to some young readers through Storytime at the Himebaugh Park on June 9.
Oceans of Possibilities is the theme for this year’s summer reading program with stories as well as songs and activities related to that theme. Children sang “Take Me Out to the Ocean” to the tune of “Take Me Out to the Ballgame.” The first activity was to roll a pair of dice to show an ocean related motif and the second die showed the speed of the activity. Roll a Word Vocabulary is a fun dice game that can be used for review or assessment, and it can be edited to suit your needs. On the first game the children waved their arms like a jellyfish, doing it in slow motion, the next roll told them to sink like an anchor and at normal speed and then jump like a dolphin at normal speed.
With the story about two little boats going out to sea where they encounter a storm, children pretended to be in a boat rocking slowly until they entered the storm making the motion much livelier. Through stories about the blue ocean and a rainbow fish they learned about sea animals and preserving the ocean from pollution to help the environment.
Games and activities included making sun visors and decorating them with popsicle stickers, sand art projects, they simulated ocean waves using a tarp and tossing wet sponges into a hula hoop.
Hannah Taylor said her children enjoy participating in the summer reading program and all the activities at the library because every year they have a different theme. “They have all kinds of different activities and what’s cool about it too is you get incentives and prizes from the prize box when you read every five hours. We also like at the end of the reading program; you can earn grand prizes. We also like to do it with their homeschool program where we can add reading hours up for that.”
The next story time will be at 6:30 p.m. Thursday, June 23 at Riverview Community Park in Warsaw. Bring your own blankets or lawn chairs. There will also be two story time events in July on the seventh and 21st. Location will be on the Coshocton Public Library July calendar.
