Mary Harris Prizes winners announced
The Johnson-Humrickhouse Museum announced the 2022 winners of The Mary Harris Prizes for non-fiction writing. This yearly competition, sponsored by Coshocton native Dr. Scott Butler, encourages the study and better understanding of Coshocton’s frontier history. It is open to persons of any age who reside or work in Coshocton County, including students whose permanent home is in Coshocton County. The essays are judged double-blind by Dr. Butler and an out-of-state panel of individuals.
This year’s first place winner was Erin Gotwals with her essay titled “Newcomers.” Second place was awarded to two winners, Megan Thomas with “The House of the Merchant” and Larry K. Stahl with “Coshocton County’s Only Revolutionary War Casualty.” Honorable mentions included Tom Edwards with “Coal and Coshocton,” Martha Richardson with “Results of Traditional Female Role Rejection During Settlement on the Ohio Frontier,” Robbie Kehl with “The Pigmy Puzzle,” Bianca Roberson with “Waterways of Coshocton County,” and Jennifer Wilkes with “We Walk in the Footsteps of Many.”
Each essay from this year as well as the essays from 2020 and 2021 will be available to read online at jhmuseum.org, by the end of the year. Past essays can be found in issues of The Coshocton Review Issues 2016 – 2020, Dr. Butler’s engaging study of 16,000 years of Coshocton history in Frontier History of Coshocton, and a study of Mary Harris’ history in Mary Harris “The White Woman” of the Ohio Frontier in 1750 can all be purchased from the JH Museum gift shop.
