Jean (Welker) Darr

Jean (Welker) Darr, age 82, of Coshocton, Ohio, died January 5, 2023 in Thornville, Ohio. She was born May 22, 1940 in Coshocton to Wayne Welker and Velva (Green) Welker.

Jean graduated from Coshocton High School and attended the Columbus School of Beauty. She started “Les’ Girls” Beauty Salon and was later hired as a Cosmetology teacher at River View High School. Jean really enjoyed teaching. She taught for twelve years. After getting her real estate license, Jean became a Realtor for Darr Real Estate. Real estate was fun until interest rates rose to twenty-three percent. She developed a passion for collecting antiques and meticulously decorating her house.  Jean and her neighbor, Debbie Chapman, started Past Time Reproductions until the construction on Main Street forced its closure. For almost a quarter of a Century, Jean was the owner of the Coshocton Antique Mall. She loved her family of dealers. Special thanks to Katie Williard who did a wonderful job of managing the Mall, Darlene Williard who kept the books, and all the desk workers who volunteered their time.

She is preceded in death by her parents, fiancé Merv Dixon of 41 years, grandson Michael Helmick, and stepdaughter Danita Dixon.

Jean is survived by her two daughters Julie (Mark) Taylor of Thornville and Jennifer (Jason) Bookless of Coshocton, Merv’s children she considered her own: Debby Bowling of Canton and Doug (Shelley) Dixon of Rhome, Texas, grandsons Alex Taylor of Thornville and Dylan Helmick of Coshocton, step grandchildren Tiffany (Justin) Hurst of Canton, and Vanessa Moore of Canton, Broc (Emily) Grigsby of Uniontown, Dustin (Kristy) Grigsby of Minerva, and many other relatives and friends.

A private family Memorial Service will be held at Given Dawson Paisley Funeral Home, 186 Park Avenue, Coshocton, OH with Pastor Stan Braxton officiating. Burial will follow at South Lawn Cemetery.
