Edgar Lower

Edgar Lower, 91, of Bakersville, was born on December 4, 1931 in Coshocton County. On Monday, January 9, 2023 he passed away reuniting with his wife, Nellie. Edgar was the son of Clyde and Erma (Nelson) Lower, his childhood was spent in West Lafayette, Ohio. He graduated from West Lafayette High School in 1951.

Edgar married his high school sweetheart, Nellie (Robinson) Lower on March 12, 1951. Together they celebrated their 70th wedding anniversary before her passing on July 31, 2021.

Together they have three children Cheryl (Tim) Specht, Jerry (Lois) Lower, and Kim (Jeff) Bennington; grandchildren Jennifer (Chris) Chapman, Danielle (Fred) Wilson, Brooke (Cory) Miceli, Kyle (Alexis) Lower, Brock Bennington, Sarah (Jared) Wheeler and Bethany (Daren) Green; great-grandchildren are Brodie and Emma Wheeler, Allyson (Jordon) Blake, Grace (Ben) Chapman, Madison and Brendan Chapman, Conner, Colton and Cassie Miceli, Hunter and Maci Green, Paige Lower and Ella Downey; great-great grandchildren Diana Blake and Cedar Chapman

His family also includes his siblings Richard Lower and Diana Karr; and sister-in law, Lavone Robinson.

In addition to his parents and wife Nellie, he is preceded in death by his in-laws, Frank and Mary Robinson; grandchildren, Brock and Brittany Bennington; sisters-in law, Ruth Lower and Bernice (Paul) Harstine; and brother-in law, Carl Robinson.

In 1947, Edgar was one of the first eleven-man football team at West Lafayette High School.

Edgar and Nellie traveled to their “Happy Place” in Florida for 30 years where he volunteered for the Citizen Assisted Patrol in Polk County for years.

Together, Edgar and Nellie started the Bakersville Garage in 1951, a farm equipment dealership which has been recognized by the President’s Club and the Blue Ribbon Excellence program.

Currently, it is the only operating farm equipment dealership in Coshocton County.

Edgar had served as elder for the many years Bakersville Community (Presbyterian) Church plus was a major force in all the improvements to the church. Edgar helped with a shovel to dig out the basement, financial support, and encouragement to get the new restrooms project started and finished.

In 1961 he was founding member of Bakersville Fire Department where he served as Chief for 50 years and was a lifetime member of the Elks Lodge #1555.

Services were held on Saturday, January 14, 2023 at 11:00 am at the Bakersville Community Church.  Private family burial followed in the Bakersville Cemetery. Friends called Friday, January 13, 2023 from 4 to 7 pm at Smith-Varns Funeral Home in Sugarcreek and on Saturday at the church one hour prior to the service.  Following services for Edgar, everyone was invited to a lunch at the Salem Fellowship Hall.
