McKee’s Mancave Barbershop is now open
McKee’s Mancave Barber Shop celebrated the opening of their new business on State Route 83 with a ribbon cutting on May 9. Tammy and Tyler McKee made the decision to step out in faith and open a family business.
“I wanted to bring back the old school barbershop feel,” Tyler said. “I grew up in my grandpa’s barbershop. John McKee was on Third Street in Coshocton for a long time. I remember people coming to his shop not even to get a haircut but just to hang out and talk for hours. You never knew who was going to walk through the door. That’s what I want this to be. I wanted something that has that vintage feel but it’s a safe place with good music and a good vibe. Sports Center is always on the TV, it’s a good place to come because we all have so much to offer each other. You don’t know that unless you sit and talk to people. I have the vintage barber chairs for people to sit in because it brings back memories of going to the barbershop with their grandpa and other things. Everyone knew I cut hair at the Mancave at home and so I decided to name this Mancave. I love this area and this space is centrally located. I get people from all over, West Lafayette, Newcomerstown, Frazeysburg.”
Family played a big part in opening the business.
“I did 10 years of law enforcement working second shift,” Tyler said. “I was missing baseball games, dance and lots of different things with my three kids. I got to a place where I didn’t want to miss out on things anymore. The answer was the barbershop, something that I love and it was a step in faith. When you step out in faith, things come not necessarily easy but they start to fall in place the way they are supposed to. About three years ago I decided to put Jesus first in my life and that’s where this story begins. Every day I went to work and it was 16 years before retirement, then at one point I realized, there has got to be something better, something more fulfilling. Conversations at NewPointe Church with J.T. who is in the band with me put the bug in my ear to just go for it. I knew I was on to something when I told people I was leaving the highway patrol and they told me I was crazy. I decided to put Jesus first and my family right behind Him. Not only do I get to hangout here, talk to people and visit but I don’t have to miss anything else with my family and that is 100% what this is about. We’ve started Barber Shop Bible studies every couple weeks and I’ve got the perfect venue to do it.”
When Tyler started school he was going to people’s houses to cut hair.
“I have a man cave at my home,” he said. “It has my pool table, a dart board, everything that I like. I made a little corner out of my man cave at home as a place for everybody to come and hang out and I would cut hair. I loved the vibe of the sports atmosphere and the vintage barber chairs that I had. It started with about 14 people and it quickly grew to about 130 clients. I can do just about everything, hot towels, straight razor lineups, beard trims, and facials.”
Pastor Aaron Dowell from NewPointe Community Church gave a blessing for Tammy and Tyler, their family and their new business.
County Commissioner Rick Conkle said, “Congratulations, your grandpa cut my hair, cut my dad’s hair for a few years and carrying on the legacy really means a lot. The family thing is great. Coshocton is a big family as far as I’m concerned. I wish you well.”
Mayor Mark Mills said, “This is awesome, it’s beautiful and I am sure I’ll be over for a cut.”
