Christmas Castle shoppers receive a hand from deputies
The Salvation Army’s Christmas Castle shopping days were held the week of Dec. 4 at Wal-Mart. Thanks to community donations, 393 children from 173 households received $85 (some children under two received less, as they were also being aided by other programs) to pick out any type of clothing they wanted.
Major Kevin Schoch is one of the pastors of the Salvation Army. “Boots, coats, shoes – whatever the child wants and needs. It just has to be apparel for the child. Deputies have been involved in the past, too. Instead of raising money for their own program, they raise money for our Christmas Castle and then come to shop with the families.” Major Schoch said that families will also be picking up food and a few gifts at the Salvation Army on Thursday, Dec. 14.
Sheriff Jim Crawford said he has had a few deputies help with shopping over the years and that it was always well received. “I want the personal interaction with the children. I want the kids to see us in a good light and know they can come to us if they need help. The first night was outstanding. We had great interaction with the families and lots of smiles. This is the true meaning of the season.”
Deputy Denny Conkle said this was the first year he had been available to be part of Shop with a Cop. “It’s just a good thing. It’s good for us to have a good interaction with families so the kids know we are always here to help them, if we ever meet with them again. Some of the kids are giving us hugs.” Conkle said the deputies are escorting the families and getting to know the kids as the parents shop. “Or we can help the child pick out clothes.” Deputies were also able to help the families keep track of what they had picked out and how much more they had to spend.
