Plans being made for Bakersville Market days

| March 3, 2024

Some Bakersville ladies are working on a project to have a farmers market in the village this summer at the community park.

“We are calling it Bakersville Market, but I really want it to be a fun Friday night event for the community,” said Marissa Henninge, market manager. “We are looking for local makers, bakers, and growers to come, set up and sell locally grown, made, and produced items. We’re also wanting to see if we can get some food trucks or a food stand to offer meals, and some local musicians. We want to give back to the community with an event once a month to enjoy Bakersville. Bakersville is a hidden gem.”

This year the market will be once a month on the first Friday every month starting in June through October from 5-8 p.m. A $10 fee for vendors reserves a 10 by 10 space. They have an online application now to gauge interest and see what products they will have coming in. Interested parties can also send a message on social media to give Henninge a heads up to promote vendors leading up to the next market.

“If they reach out in advance, we are able to promote them and their business and what they are bringing,” she said. “At the community park we can utilize the pavilion space and the park as well. It starts at 5 p.m. so they will be able to set up at 4 p.m., possibly earlier. We are still working through some of the details with the park. We are asking potential vendors to give us some advanced notice so that they can be prepared ahead of time and that everything is all handmade and locally produced.”

Henninge was talking with other moms at Vacation Bible School and several commented that they wished there was a local market with some produce and things they needed on the weekend so they wouldn’t have to drag their kids to the grocery store or make it to town early on a Saturday.

They are hoping to open it up to fundraisers for local organizations, like the Bakersville royalty program or local FFA or 4-H programs looking for space to promote their fundraising event. “We would love to have them come in as well or even the extension office, WIC, or the local library could come and read stories or something,” Henninge said.

Henninge working together with Renee Stein, a Bakersville original resident, would like for the market to be more of an event where people can come, get some local produce, and maybe eat dinner on a Friday night.

“We are starting this with local funds so we are trying to have some activities for kids, they can play in the park and maybe have some games or crafts. We hope the local community is patient as we learn and figure things out,” Henninge said. “We are hopeful that next year we can have it more often and it will be bigger. This year we have some ideas, and we are going to jump in and see what all we can do. So far the community has been supportive.”

The market will have full access to the park facilities, indoor restrooms, kitchen access, use of the pavilion, the playground and it is off the road. They are having it in the evening so that more people can come. The Bakersville Market dates are June 7, July 5, Aug. 2, Sept. 6, and Oct. 4.
