Williams holds dinner for special education teachers and aides
Last fall, River View Senior Maliya Williams planned a prom for those in the county with special needs for her senior project. The prom was held at Hopewell School and was a huge success. As she was planning the prom, she noticed that staff didn’t seem to be as appreciated as they should be.
“I decided to that I would do something special for each and every one of them, which is why I raffled off a basket in order to cover the costs of their gifts,” said Williams. She planned a dinner at The Warehouse for all special education teachers and aides in River View Local School District and Hopewell School.
The dinner was held on May 1 and about 20 people attended. Williams used the money she raised raffling off the basket to buy tumblers for each educator with their name, special needs teacher and words of inclusion on them. They also received a key chain that had words of inclusion on each. “I ended up having to pay out of my own money because the tumblers were more expensive than I expected,” she said.
She purchased gifts for around 35 teachers and aides. “My ‘grandpa’ John Larson donated all of the food and drinks for the dinner.”
Williams said she wanted the teachers to know how appreciated they are. They have “to deal with so much and they have many rough days” they go through. “Plus the pay – they deserve so much more.” Holding this dinner was just something she wanted to do to thank teachers and is not part of her senior project.
She will be attending The Ohio State University to be a nurse, something she has had planned since she was in sixth grade. “I want to thank John Larson for all he did,” she said.
