Coshocton Antique Power Association holds summer show
The Coshocton Antique Power Association hosted its summer show at Bakersville Community Park in the Bud Hawk Arena on Saturday and Sunday July 13-14.
There were 105 total units including 90 tractors, mowers, hit and miss engines, plus a steam engine, enabling the club to exceed their goal of 100 units.
“I think a lot of the tractors are local,” said Erik Kelley with association. “We saw more people driving their tractors in than hauling them on trailers. There were a lot of units coming in early so it looked like we would meet our goal of 100. The featured tractor this year is the Farmall, but all antique tractors and equipment were welcome to come. We are always looking for new members. We have a building at the Coshocton County Fairgrounds you have probably seen during the fair that is full of tractors.”
Craig Franks and his father from the Shreve area brought one of their Farmall tractors. They have 12 Farmall tractors total. Three generations have lived on the same family farm near Shreve for almost 100 years and they still have one of their original Farmall tractors that belonged to his grandpa.
Franks remembers driving a tractor as young as 8 years old. “When you are raised on a farm everyone works and kids learn good work ethics from an early age,” he said. “It is not unusual to see a kid driving a tractor in the field or on the road.”
There was also a pink Massey Harris Tractor painted for breast cancer awareness in memory of Evelyn Childress. The tractor belonged to Jim Childress who was one of the original founders’ active in the Coshocton Antique Power Association. His wife Evelyn was a breast cancer survivor. Their son Bruce brought the pink tractor to the show in honor of his parents.
With help from donations Ridgewood FFA was able to purchase a 1972 656 International Tractor in Memory of Austin Yoder for use on their school farm. Yoder was a true farmer and loved international tractors.
Along with tractors, mowers and hit and miss engines those attending the event got to see an old steam engine in action from the A D Company Steam Engine made in Swanton, Ohio. Years ago there used to be several steam engines around this area, according to Larry Stahl.
Ridgewood FFA provided pedal tractors for the kiddie pedal tractor pull at noon on Saturday as well as providing tractor games. Progressive Livestock 4-H was operating the food stand and Jon Gallwitz was under the pavilion with a variety of farm toys to purchase again this year.
