Roger Ross Cain
Roger Ross Cain, age 89, of West Lafayette, passed away on Tuesday, February 11, 2025. He was born on January 17, 1936, at home in Muskingum County. He was the only child of the late Burton B. Cain and Carma (Ross) Cain. They moved to a farm one mile west of Fresno when he was 3 months old. He liked all animals and enjoyed fishing and trapped raccoons and muskrats to earn some money as a child.
He graduated from Fresno High School in 1954 and Taccoa Falls College in 1959. Roger played basketball and baseball in high school and he played the trumpet in high school and college.
He served in the U.S. Army Reserve 717th Railway Battalion for 6 years from October 1959 until he was honorably discharged in October 1965.
Roger married Carol (Johnson) Cain on November 5, 1960. He sang “I Love You Truly” to Carol as she walked down the aisle to meet him. They had one daughter, Brenda (Cain) Flagg of Aurora, Ohio. She married Michael Flagg, and they had 3 children, Hunter Flagg of Willoughby, OH, Morgan Flagg (Fiancée Mogan Hamlin) of Cuyahoga Falls, OH, and Madison Flagg (Fiancé Danny Sasak) of Cleveland, OH. He enjoyed spending time with his daughter, son-in-law and three grandchildren.
Roger loved sports; he was an avid golfer and a member of the Monday Senior League at Hilltop Gulf Course until they closed, then they golfed at River Greens. He enjoyed research, bowling, flying radio-controlled airplanes, playing cards, going for walks, traveling, and playing Pickleball at Kids America.
Roger completed an Industrial Electronics Course and received a diploma as an Electronic Technician from the ICS National Radio School. He worked at Huprich Appliance in West Lafayette when needed, repairing radios and televisions.
Roger worked for GE in Coshocton for 10 years. Then he worked for Ohio Power Co, now AEP, in Coshocton, New Philadelphia and Canton. His co-workers in New Philadelphia nicknamed him “SUGAR”. He retired from AEP in 1996 after 26 years of service.
He was a Bi-Vocational Pastor for Perry Chapel Baptist Church from 1970 to 1976 and Pleasant Hill Baptist Church from 1974 to 1980. Roger was a compassionate man and helped many people in various ways.
Roger was a member of the First Baptist Church of Newcomerstown and enjoyed singing in the church choir and playing the guitar. He was a member of UWVA Local #116, a life member of the AMVETS #536, and a former member of the Elks Lodge # 376.
Rober volunteered for Habitat for Humanity in Coshocton, Journeys End- Food Bank in Newcomerstown, and Coshocton in Bloom after he retired. He also had a rare blood type, and donated blood for many years.
He is survived by his wife, Carol Cain, daughter, Brenda (Michael) Flagger and three grandchildren. He is also survived by his sister-in-law, Katie Meiser of Coshocton, brothers-in-law, James Johnson of Smithville, MO and Bob (Barbara) Johnson of Seaford, DE.
Along with his parents, Roger is preceded in death by his sister-in-law, Eleanor Johnson and brother-in-law, George Meiser.

Calling hours will be held on Tuesday, February 18, 2025, from 10:30 am to 12:00 pm at Given-Dawson-Paisley Funeral Home. A funeral service will follow at 12:00 pm with Pastor Wayne Baker officiating. Burial will follow at Coshocton County Memory Gardens with the Coshocton County Veterans Honor Guard preforming Military Honors.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made in Roger’s name to the Coshocton County Animal Shelter.
