Mark’s Musings – February 22, 2012
Wondering where winter went? It seems that most don’t care. I imagine the kids care. A lack of snow means no days off school, sledding, snowball fights or crafting a cool snowman – or snowwoman depending of course. Now, you could do what Dad told me they used to do “back in the day”. Make a bunch of snowballs during the winter, freeze them in some spare little corner of the freezer and then, bring them out in the middle of July and have a blast. I have never tried this but apparently the boys in Roscoe did a few times.
Speaking of the boys in Roscoe, I noticed that one of the stories presented at the museum during the “Remembering winter” sharing day was one about the sledding from the top of Roscoe hill and going all the way across the bridge that existed at the bottom of the hill. I believe it was next to Sanford Miller’s gas station – which most youngsters (and oldsters) can remember sat at the bottom of the hill. I believe that dad told me someone had to act as a “flagger” and stop traffic. Lord knows you couldn’t stop a sled travelling at near the speed of sound down that hill.
I’m not quite sure what is happening with the Buckeyes. A loss to Michigan is troublesome not only on the football field but on the hardwood as well. We can hope that the Big 10 conference is loaded with talented teams this year and the Buckeyes can use that experience and knowledge in the NCAA tournament to their advantage. I still have the impression that this team is capable of winning it all and can put it together at tournament time. That’s when it matters most of course.
The folks at River View deserve to be proud of their state qualifying swim relay team that will be competing this Thursday in Canton. Good luck, boys! And be sure to watch next week’s Beacon for more details.
Have you “liked” us on Facebook yet? My increasingly gray hair makes me not of the Facebook generation for sure – but I believe that social media is here to stay. The Beacon is pleased to keep you informed of some of the lighter things happening with our regular posts on Facebook. You can like us on Facebook at www.facebook.com/TheCoshoctonCountyBeacon.
Caught any NBA games yet this year? Nope. I thought not. Okay, that’s not fair. I am sure that many of you get caught up in the frantic pace of watching LeBron beat up on the hapless Cavaliers yet again. Sometimes I think watching paint dry might be more fun. Reading Webster’s dictionary from front to back comes to mind, or perhaps, delving into Wikipedia and discovering things I did not even know existed.
You might find something interesting.
