United Way puts spotlight on handicapped society
COSHOCTON – For the month of July, the Coshocton Handicapped Society has been chosen to be spotlighted for the United Way Agency of the Month.
In 1990, Lloyd Udder and Duane Beck started the handicapped society, with May 23, 2013 marking its 23rd anniversary. It is the only agency of its kind in Ohio to be run solely on volunteers.
Current programs they run are:
- Medical equipment loan program, which provides equipment to any person in need
- Wheelchair ramp building, providing ramps to those qualifying for accessibility in their homes
- Air conditioning, provides window units to those who have a doctor’s prescription
Currently, the handicapped society has 10 actively involved volunteers.
Their future goals include trying to get more community involvement, to provide more accessibility to those in need and to get the knowledge of their agency out in the community so that people realize what they have to offer.
The handicapped society will always accept donations of medical equipment. They also need volunteers to man the phone at the office so that they can keep it open later in the day. Members are also needed and you do not have to be handicapped to be a member.
