Coshocton Hospital celebrates 2013 Nurse of the Year
COSHOCTON – Coshocton Hospital and the members of the Ohio Nursing Association (ONA) have announced the selection of Mark Nelson, RN, as the 2013 Coshocton Hospital Nurse of the Year. Nelson joined Coshocton Hospital in 1996 as an aide in the hospital’s extended care unit. After completing his education at Kent State Tuscarawas Campus, he joined the ED staff as a registered nurse and has worked in that department for over 15 years.
Nominations for this honor are accepted from Coshocton Hospital’s nursing union members, who vote by secret ballot to select the winning candidate. The nurse of the year selection is based on overall aspects of patient care as well as the nominee’s overall commitment to the practice of nursing reflected in leadership, commitment and organizational involvement.
The nomination cited Nelson’s willingness to go above and beyond for his patients and his co-workers. In addition to his nursing duties, he also serves as the ED education nurse, providing ongoing education to all ED staff. He also took a leadership role in the recent development and rollout of the new computerized physician order entry (CPOE) system for the ED physicians and providers.
Nelson expressed surprise at winning this award the very first time he was nominated for the honor. “I was shocked when I heard I had been selected for this award,” said Nelson. “The fast pace of the ED keeps me interested and challenged. I am pleased to work with a great team of people who make it fun to come to work every day.”
Nelson is married to fellow Coshocton Hospital RN Lynn Nelson. They are the proud parents of a daughter, Hannah, and a son, Mitchell. Nelson’s family joined him at the Nurse of the Year reception hosted by Coshocton Hospital and the Ohio Nursing Association and held in his honor at the hospital on Dec. 30, 2013.
