Local Bounty Update

| April 17, 2014

Happy Easter Local Bounty Shoppers: Whether you are looking to fill an Easter basket for a loved one or your entire table for an Easter feast, bring your list to LB first and get inspired by what our vendors offer. We have loads to share this week, so let’s cut right to the chase…

Enrico’s Hot Peanuts

Give the gift of hot nuts this Easter. We have made up snack bags pretzels, M&Ms and our hot nuts – an amazingly salty, sweet and spicy combo.

Flying Pig Farm

It’s been a weird week for weather! Luckily the greenhouse has stayed warm with the sun shining in so our seedlings faired well. We don’t have sprouts this week but they will be back next week. We’ve had questions about taste. The sprouts taste like a milder version of the mature plant. Broccoli, radish, mustard and lentil are pretty self-explainatory. The alfalfa and red clover are grassy but sweet. Don’t forget to pick up some fresh granola or jam for your Easter breakfast!

Free as a Bird Eggs

Karen Barnes from the Port Washington area has been providing cage-free multi-colored eggs to a food cooperative in Pittsburgh for four years. And now, she has decided to vend with us. We are excited to have her eggs in the store this week (not sure if she will have them here today – but check our Facebook page for updates – they will for sure be there tomorrow). You’ll learn more about Karen and her flock in next week’s update.

Hillbippie

It is an exciting day for the hillbippies, we will be putting our bee package in the hive today! We have learned so much from the Coshocton County Beekeepers and are looking forward to our bee journey. Big thanks to Dick Mullet of Mullet Apiaries for giving us a hands on trip through a hive last weekend. Stay tuned! In LB this week my newest wine jelly flavors are back. Niagara & Mint and Catabwa & Lavender! I have them in nice 4oz jars, they would make a great easter treat. Baguettes, Boule will be there today and Braided Swiss will be in Friday. Happy Easter all!

Keene Creek Farm

Celebrate Easter with some of our speciality food products…Marissa made up dark chocolate sea salt fudge (cute Easter packaging on some of it) and some special Aunt M’s Monster Mix that has dark chocolate Easter M&Ms. Yum. We also have several ham steaks available. They are smoked and cured slices of ham – you can enjoy the flavor of a ham without the long cook time. Seriously toss them in the oven (350, in a glass baking dish, covered, with a splash of water) for about 1/2 hour and enjoy. Our ham loaf is now gone. But we have brats galore and a good supply of breakfast sausage. Oh, how could we forget to mention spinach?!?! We have a few bags available this week. Lots more will come in next week if the sun continues to shine. Easter blessings to you and yours.

Rolling Acres Nursery

Atlee and Linda Burkholder are our newest vendor. They own a greenhouse off of SR 643 south of New Bedford. This morning they are bringing a variety of perennials to Local Bounty – forsythia, lilacs, and a variety of other perennial bushes.

Salad Bar Farm

Fresh kale and lettuce was delivered for the week.

Strawberry Hill Farm

Spring is here (though it’s hard to tell at the moment!), and Strawberry Hill Farm is selling certified organic seedlings for your garden. You can order them and pick them up at Local Bounty. Just fill out an order form at the store (by our jam and cookbook display) and put it in the folder provided. Seedlings available include many kinds of tomatoes (including heirloom varieties), sweet peppers, sweet potatoes, and basil. You’ll see a color chart at the store with pictures and descriptions of them. We raise these seedlings right on our farm, and they are certified organic by the Ohio Ecological Food and Farm Association (OEFFA). Seedlings come in 3-inch biodegradable pots, and sell for $2.50 each. Payment is on delivery to the store. Seedlings will be ready in early May. We will let you know when your plants are ready and you can pick them up at Local Bounty. Here’s to warmer weather and great gardens!

Windy Hill Berry Farm

Hopefully the Cherry Blossoms in Washington, D.C. survived this week’s cold snap. In their honor Windy Hill Farm is bringing in Chocolate Chip Cherry Bread, made with real sweet cherries and no artificial colors. Yummy with some of Pink Elephant’s coffee. [Did you know that Terese used to work in Washington, D.C. for the National Science Foundation, grew up in Annapolis, MD and today (Thursday) is her birthday!] Look for more White Trash (white chocolate snack mix) to be restocked on Friday.

Woodberry Farm

It is a wonderful time of year, we celebrate Easter and spring is finally on its way. When shopping for your Easter needs don’t forget to stop by the Local Bounty for all your needs. Pick up your Easter ham (in the form of ham steaks) from Keene Creek Farm or Thousand Hill Acres, maybe pick up some bread from Rosemary and jelly from Windy Hill Farm. Then for your treat basket needs we have come with several different sweets for your delight. We have put together small Easter baskets containing Goat Milk fudge rabbits and eggs. There is one special one only with rabbits that will be some where in the store, if you find it, it has a special disxounted price. There will also be a new mix special for easter that will go great in any homemade basket. There are also three new flavors of fudge being introduced, maple, maple walnut, and for the banana fans banana cream. It has been a real pleasure creating all these new items for the bounty again, i really missed it. Please come by and check out all that the bounty has to offer and have a Happy Easter.
