Local Bounty Update

| May 22, 2014

Good Morning,

We open today at 10, who’s ready?!  We have a lot of great things in store for this week, read below and see you soon.

Did you know? Waste not Want not

– Food processing uses a lot of packaging, which is necessary for large farms to keep food from spoiling as it is transported and stored.

– The EPA has estimated that the U.S. produced 11.9 million tons of plastic packaging, and over 90% of this went to a landfill after being used just once. (2003)(www.elocal.com)

What you can do: Buy food with minimal packaging, recycle or reuse packages, be conscious!! Shop local 🙂

Updates from our Vendors:

Flying Pig Farm

Stock up on sprouts this week…next week we won’t have any. (We’re taking a Memorial Day break!) If you didn’t try the mustard greens last week grab some now. (Located on the top right shelf of the cooler.) They are nutritious and great steamed with garlic and onions. Granola makes a great snack on the go. We make ours with whole grains, honey and healthy oils. Don’t forget to pick up fire starters for your summer bonfires! Made with recycled junk mail and candles, they burn for a long time and will make it easy to start your fire. Have a safe and happy Memorial Day weekend!

Hillbippie

Good morning and Happy Memorial day weekend.  I will have Focaccia, French, Boule and Full Wheat bread in the store this week.  Also, my paper bread bags are totally compostable!  Come try my newest tea, Spring tonic, today from 2-6.  I will have it iced 🙂

Keene Creek Farm

As another market week begins, we are grateful to have the opportunity to contribute to the community the way we are. Yesterday I walked into a local business and the store owner greeted me from the back saying, “Hey, we’ve been enjoying all of your foods.” Thank you, thank you. It never gets old hearing from our customers. Another customer shared this week that she used our fresh bratwurst sausage in a butternut squash and lentil soup. Yum. Love the feedback – many thanks. This week we will have a few bags of salad greens (they are *not* washed though – I found that washing this variety of lettuce shortens its refrigerator life – so just rinse the greens as you need them). The spinach is done for now. It got too hot in the hoop house and it started to bolt. The countdown to a fresh batch of pork has begun. We will take a few piggies to the processor mid-June. After then we will have more of your favorites in stock (including ham loaf, extra peppery sausage, and bacon).

Millcreek Homestead

Granola is back!  I put a limited supply on the shelves last week and it sold out so quickly that I made lots for this week.  Cranberry Almond and Maple Pecan are both available in the small or family size.  The soap shelf is also restocked. Check out the new look for Coffee Mocha.  (I’ve been having a lot of fun in my soap room!)  New duckie soap is also available.  The Princess Duckies are scented cotton candy and have a pretty pink swirl.  In honor of our trip to Africa, I have Safari Duckie soap.  Lions, zebras, elephant, and safari guide ducks.  All the profits from this soap will be going to help support the hospital in Kalene, Zambia, where we volunteered!

Pink Elephant Coffee Roasters

Our newest offering,  Colombia Excelso Huila, has been very popular with everyone who has tried it! We lightly roast this coffee from the Huila region of Colombia to bring out subtle flavors of nut, lemon, fruit and toffee. At home, brew it strong for a perfect cup of fresh, locally roasted coffee!

Seneca Lotion

Ralph Miller, creator and maker of Seneca Lotion, is our newest vendor (he hails from Wooster). His product is an all-natural topical ointment that “heals” all that ails you. We will let you know when he’s in the store to tell you all about his product. There is a tester bottle open at the market, so feel free to help yourself. Seneca Lotion is sold across the United States and in Canada.
