Write-On Writers Guild members write about bikes
COSHOCTON – The Write-On Writers Guild will meet at 6 p.m. Monday, June 2, at the Coshocton Public Library in the basement meeting room. The topic of stories shared will focus on the Great Ohio Bicycle Adventure’s 2014 theme, “Take a Ride on the Wild Side.”
Here is an example of just one of the many stories those who attend can expect to hear.
A Hand-Me Down Bicycle
My first bicycle was red. That’s a good start. Actually a faded red because it was my mother’s bicycle. Before her, it belonged to my Aunt Lola. In fact, recently, Mum gave that old bicycle from the 1920s to one of Aunt Lola’s children.
That tall, thin bicycle was it, ride it or walk, for a couple of years. Then my parents bought me a bright blue two-fendered J.C. Higgins bicycle. This standard bike was one speed, with brakes applied by pedaling backwards once, then standing on a back pedal.
Mum made me a navy blue cloth bag to fasten behind my bike seat. It had a zipper, and was large enough to hold my piano lesson books, as well as a coin purse for my 75-cent fee. Once a week, I pedaled more than a mile to Mrs. Poulin’s home above their grocery store, parking my bike against their railing.
