Elks hosting community barbecue
COSHOCTON – The Elks 376 feels for the local children and families who have had to use Nationwide Children’s Hospital and wanted to do their part to help.
“RD Promotions raises money for the hospital, specifically for the emergency room and cancer department, which are the two areas most frequented by our community,” said Davonna Markley, office manager at the Elks. “This is a cause we wanted to be involved in because any parent who has had a child at Children’s can sympathize with the children and families there and the need for funds to make their stay as comfortable as possible.”
To help do that, the Elks decided to host a community barbecue Saturday, June 14, at the lodge at 434 Chestnut St. All activities will be outside in the back parking lot.
Food will be served from 2 to 7 p.m., with a chicken dinner costing $8 and hamburger or hotdog meals being $5. There also will be a hotdog eating contest at 2:30 p.m., open mic/DJ services provided by RD Promotions, emergency vehicles on display such as the MRAP, fire trucks and ambulances, jail house and bake sale. There also will be a dunk tank with community celebrities Deputy Dave Stone, Jerry Stenner and Zach Bush, from Rent to Own, which is sponsoring the hotdog eating contest.
“The jail house is fun,” Markley said. “You can approach the officer and pay them $1 to have anyone arrested. They then have to get someone to bail them out for $2. It’s a fun little way to keep people entertained.”
Live entertainment also will be provided by Direct Energy from 7 to 10 p.m.
“They play classic rock and are out of Columbus,” Markley said. “It’s a nine piece band with a full horn section. They are very high energy and a lot of fun. They are perfect for this.”
There also will be raffles and 50/50s.
“It is a community event and open to families,” Markley said. “Bring your kids and have fun.”
She also is very appreciative of the community’s support for this event.
“We’ve had a great response from different area business owners and our members for donations to help make this happen,” Markley said.
