Local Bounty Update

| September 25, 2014

Good Morning,

Happy fair time!  We have one of the greatest fairs in Ohio, make sure to check out the art hall, animals and of course the food.  Celebrate agriculture and art of our great county.  See you there!  Don’t forget to stop by and see us today and tomorrow 10-6, Saturday 9-1.

Did you know?

The Farmer’s Almanac weather folklore states:
When the leaves show their under sides, Be very sure that rain betides.

Hillbippie
We had our final canning event of the harvest season last Sunday.  We had a total of 40 quarts of Tomato Sauce!  It will taste so good this winter, there is nothing finer than a homegrown tomato 🙂  The weather has been bout near perfect up here on the hill and we are soaking it up.  It is wonderful fair weather!  I have entered a wine jelly and also a salsa into the fair as well as Braided Challah I am calling “Butter Braid”.  I can’t wait to see them there.  This week at the bounty you can pick up your own wine jelly to go with my delicious “Butter Braid” bread.  You can also put my wine jelly ontop of cream cheese for an impressive spread.  Look for Focaccia in the market today and Braided Challah and French Boule Bread bowls Friday.

Keene Creek Farm
Ah fall, we welcome you with open arms. It has been awhile since we last updated on our orphan piglets. So far, we have only lost two. And from what we have read, that’s not bad given the situation we had on our our hands. They are growing like crazy – the larger ones are probably pushing 40 lbs now. This week we made more Dark Chocolate Sea Salt Fudge and more Aunt M’s Monster Mix. We will also have a new product – Bar Stool Pretzels – available soon, stay tuned for when to expect them at LB. Marissa is working at LB Friday morning (10-2). Swing in and try some of our ham balls slathered with Star Fire Food’s Sweet Banana Pepper Relish. You’ll be glad you did.

Millcreek Homestead
Soap making requires quite a bit of planning ahead, because soap needs to cure about a month before it is ready for you to use.  During that time the soap is getting harder as the water evaporates out, giving you a bar of soap that will last much longer.  So yesterday, planning ahead in my soap room, I made snowflake shaped soap!  Eeek!  Snow!!!  Instead of dwelling on THAT, lets enjoy the beautiful fall weather we’ve been having with some warmer sounding soap.  On the shelf at Local Bounty right now is Pumpkin Pie soap, made with real pumpkin puree and pumpkin pie spice.  (If you think it is too pretty to use, it will look cute next to your bathroom sink.)  Another popular fall scent is Orange Spice which is scented with sweet orange, cinnamon, ginger, and clove essential oils and made with ground oatmeal.  In a couple weeks, look for pumpkin scented Thanksgiving duckies.  Super cute!

Mullet Apiaries
Fall ushers in changes in flavors at the dinner table, both old favorites and new. Here’s a lovely way to enjoy honey. Our fellow beekeepers, Loveridge House Brands, have comb honey available right now at the Bounty. Pair it, or one of our Mullet Apiaries creamed honeys, with a tray of cheese, some crackers or baguettes (Hillbippie’s, of course) and apple or pear slices. Some suggestions for cheese/cracker combos: a type of bleu like Gorgonzola with a water cracker, a rosemary cracker with a baby Swiss, a baguette with a Parmigiano-Reggiano, or a hearty rye with an aged cheddar or gouda. Serve with the combed honey or creamed honey and fruit and let your guests pile it on as they choose. A sweet dessert treat would be a soft brie or creamed cheese with pears, our Cinnamon Creamed Honey and hazelnut or almonds thin nut crackers (delicious and gluten free) and, if you are so inclined, pair it with a sweet after dinner wine or some Pink Elephant Coffee.  Enjoy!

Strawberry Hill Farm
Since there is no farmers market in Coshocton this Saturday due to the fair, we’re bringing more produce than usual to Local Bounty. Look in the cooler for our green beans and wax beans, romaine lettuce, kale, cilantro, and summer squash and zucchini. (The squash and zucchini are in large plastic bags. Take out one, two, or however many you want.) We’re also bringing boxes of cherry tomatoes, including sweet Sun Sugars. Have a great time at the fair this week!

Thank you so much!
