Local swimmers pick up 5 firsts at CHS Invitational
COSHOCTON – With the outside temperature hovering around 10 degrees swimmers from eight area schools enjoyed a water temperature of 82 degrees in the water at Coshocton High School on Saturday, Jan. 10 at the annual CHS Invitational swim meet.
Bryce Philabaum, Brian Rogers and the boys’ 200 meter freestyle relay team of Bryce Philabaum, Cody McVay, Patrick Brouse and Brian Rogers picked up first place titles for the Redskins while Lydia Els and Brendan Dickson garnered top place finishes for the Black Bears. The Redskin male swimmers finished in fourth with county rival River View in fifth. Dover was the number one team on the boys’ side and also captured the girls’ crown. Coshocton’s lady swimmers came in second with the Black Bears in fourth.
Schools competing were: Dover, Tri-Valley, Grandview Heights, Coshocton, River View, New Philadelphia, John Glenn and Carrollton.

The Redskins placed second in the boys 200 meter medley relay at 1:57.96 with Bryce Philabaum, Brian Rogers, Cody McVay and Patrick Brouse competing. The Black Bears came in third with the foursome of Nate Cooper, Dalton Hammond, Brendan Dickson and Andy Smith at 2:08.32.
Junior Sydney Ringenberg placed third in the girls 200 meter IM at 3:06.25. In the same event on the boys’ side of things, Redskin junior Bryce Philabaum placed first at 2:25.74 and junior teammate Cody McVay placed second at 2:31.80.
Local male swimmers dominated the boys’ 50 meter freestyle swim with Black Bear senior Brendan Dickson placing first at 27.14, Coshocton senior Patrick Brouse tied teammate Talon Babcock for second at 27.44, and RV senior Dalton Hammond placed third at 27.54.
Redskin Cody McVay captured a third place in the boys’ 100 meter butterfly with a time of 1:10.77.
Coshocton senior Brian Rogers made a statement with a first place in the boys’ 100 meter freestyle swim at 56.14 and Dalton Hammond placed third for the Black Bears at 1:01.46.
River View senior Lydia Els placed first in the girls’ grueling 500 meter freestyle swim at 6:18.71. The 500 is the event’s longest swim with 20 down and backs in the 25 meter pool.
In the boys’ 200 meter freestyle relay, the Redskins took first place with a time of 1:45.96. The foursome had Bryce Philabaum, Cody McVay, Patrick Brouse and Brian Rogers. River View’s quad of Brendan Dickson, Andy Smith, Nate Cooper and Dalton Hammond came in third at 1:50.61.
The boys’ 100 meter backstroke saw Bryce Philabaum for the Redskins place second at 1:05.35. Coshocton senior swimmer Georgia Brown picked up a second place in the girls 100 meter backstroke at 1:32.94 while teammate Sydney Ringenberg placed third at 1:33.45.
Coshocton’s Brian Rogers placed third in the boys 100 meter breaststroke at 1:13.50 only mere seconds behind Dover’s Frannie Brogan who has committed to swim for The Ohio State University.
Overall, local swimmers picked up 18 first, second or third places in the event out of 22 total events. That is a terrific performance for two teams that swim in the same pool and provide encouragement to each other in true sportsmanship fashion. The ECOL meet is this Friday so come out and enjoy some great swimming.
