Locals bringing self defense to you

| January 14, 2015
Self defense: Brad Birkhimer and James Wilson are both trained martial artists who want to use their knowledge to help people learn the basics of self defense. “We want to teach them how to be aware, avoid situations and if they find themselves physically confronted be able to end it in a very short fashion,” Birkhimer said. Their self defense class is designed for people of a variety of ages and levels of physical ability and they also are working on a class just for children. “We want to give people the confidence and ability to not be afraid of the unknown,” Wilson said. Because their business is mobile, they also plan to host classes at a variety of locations. To learn more about the new Mobile Martial Arts business, visit their booth at the Health, Safety, and Wellness Expo, which will be held from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 17, at Kids America. COSHOCTON – Brad Birkhimer and James Wilson are both trained martial artists who want to use their knowledge to help people learn the basics of self defense.

“We want to teach them how to be aware, avoid situations and if they find themselves physically confronted be able to end it in a very short fashion,” Birkhimer said.

The pair recently opened Mobile Martial Arts and are offering a self defense class that is for people of a variety of ages and levels of physical ability.

“We want to give people the confidence and ability to not be afraid of the unknown and the tools to give them a chance to defend themselves,” Wilson said.

He is a fourth degree in Taekwondo and has studied a variety of other martial arts disciplines while Birkhimer has a black belt in Taekwondo, has done wrestling and grappling for 38 years and is currently training in Jiu-Jitsu.

“A lot of people I’ve talked to over the years just want to learn the basics of self defense,” Wilson said. “We figured it was time to finally do that for people and by being mobile we can bring classes to where people are at.”

The pair will announce some of their already scheduled classes and costs for them at the Health, Safety, and Wellness Expo, which will be held from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 17, at Kids America, and provide information on how people can schedule classes for groups of 10-15. Right now they have a Self Defense for Life course, want to do a Little Dragon course for kids and teach a class on general awareness and rape prevention. Participants will learn how to react in different scenarios and be given the opportunity to practice what they are taught.

“We hope people never have to use what we teach them, but if they do we want them to be able to do all they can to help save their life or that of a loved one,” Birkhimer said.
