Are you cooking for someone you love this Valentine’s Day? We will in our house, all day long. Heart-shaped scones for breakfast, mini Italian meat loaves for dinner, haven’t decided on lunch yet though. Whatever you decide to make this week/weekend, we have lots of pork cuts to choose from. Ham loaf, ham steaks, brats, roasts, chops (marinated or naked), smoked sausage links and more. Our bacon supply has almost hit rock bottom. We have some hanging in the smokehouse right now, but it will be another week before it’s done. For your Valentine we also have little packages of food love. Bar Stool Pretzels and Aunt M’s Monster Mix are decked out for the occasion. Happy Valentine’s Day!
Millcreek Homestead
Does your Valentine love lavender? I have 2 types of lavender gift boxes for you to choose from for a great pampering gift! As a mom, one of the best gifts I can get from my husband is an hour of quiet for a long hot bath. (Don’t forget the truffles from Flying Pig Farm!)
Windy Hill Farm
Apple Butter is finally here! Have you ever wondered how apple butter is made? Well, it begins in the Fall with a 30-minute drive (each way) to pick 2 different varieties of apples. Then the apples are quartered, boiled until softened, and manually cranked through a food mill until beautiful applesauce comes pouring out the other end. The warm applesauce is then packed into quart-sized jars and processed in a hot water canner to become apple butter at a latter date. (Making applesauce can take most of a day unless you draft some helpers.) When it’s time to make apple butter, six jars of the applesauce are emptied into a crock pot and simmered for 1-1/2 days. Then sugar and spices are added and the applesauce is cooked for a couple more hours, making the kitchen smell amazing! Finally, the apple butter is ready to go into half pint jars and processed in a hot water canner to seal the lids. After the jars cool, they are labelled and, in the case of Windy Hill Farm Apple Butter and jams, fabric circles (which were cut out from fabric purchased at a local fabric store) are added to the lids and the jars are delivered to Local Bounty. It’s a labor of love, from our farm to your table.
Thanks so much,
