WEST LAFAYETTE – Pat Lewis, left watches as her three-year-old great-granddaughter Nevaeh Salters tests her car on the track at the Awana Grand Prix. She also had two other great-grandchildren competing in the event, which was held Saturday, March 14, at the West Lafayette First Baptist Church. Ninety to 100 area youth participated in the event. “We did this last year ourselves, but wanted to open it up to other young people this year,” said Mary Mansfield. Awana groups from Calvary Baptist Church and Chili Crossroads Church also were invited to test their cars on the electronic track supplied by Awana Missionary Jeff Ruff. Trophies were awarded for the best design and fastest car. “Some of these cars are really fast,” said Richard Holbert, who was helping at the starting line. “They’ve come a long way since I was a kid.”
