Building Trades students construct shelter
COSHOCTON – Eight senior students from Brad Sarchet’s building trades class at the Coshocton County Career Center recently completed a 10 by 80 foot shelter at the Coshocton County Sheriff Office’s shooting range.
“The students get work experience and the community gets something built for free,” said Sarchet. “It’s a win-win situation for everybody.”
The students worked on each element of the project including everything from estimates of material and reading blueprints to digging post holes and constructing the shelter.
“These kids worked hard all winter long on this,” said Judd Bone of the Career Center. “They came out in the cold when it was wet and muddy, and they did a very nice job on it.”
The students started the project in November and finished last week due to the harsh winter. Plans for the structure were state-approved.
The sheriff’s office had contacted the Career Center about constructing a shelter at the shooting range so that officers can continue to practice during bad weather. The sheriff’s office has their annual qualifications and their special training proficiency at the range. They also have special response team training on the grounds, and the site features an obstacle course where officers complete their physical conditioning.
“This is something we’ve been wanting to do for a long time,” said Lt. Jim Crawford. “If it’s raining, employees can still come out here and practice. We’re very thankful for Mr. Sarchet and his building class for coming out here and erecting this pavilion. I couldn’t be more appreciative of his students erecting this shelter. Not only am I appreciative, but I’ve heard some nice comments about it from the employees.”
The students went out to the range during the normal two-hour lab to complete the work. They spent approximately 50 hours per student constructing the shelter.
“One nice thing about a project like this is I have friends in the construction business and they’re looking for people like this,” said Bone. “These kids are graduating soon and will be ready for a job in six months, and they’re certified and ready to go.”
The students in Sarchet’s class include: Amanda Hayes, Kyle Nelson, Brett Cox, Amber Van Dyne, Amber Hawk, Dustin Crews, Kevin Hardy, and Joey Sarchet.
