Super Moms group offers support to moms

| May 10, 2015

COSHOCTON – The goal of the new Super Moms group is to help create a support system for moms of all ages and give them tools to help cope with the stresses of motherhood.

“In my private practice I was finding that there are a number of moms who have limited support groups with other moms,” said Sheila Mayse, from MSW Solutions, LLC and The Mentoring Center of Coshocton County. “Super Moms is meant to be affirming and supportive because I feel we can draw strength and energy from one another.”

The first Super Moms meeting was held April 26, with six moms in attendance.

“I think it went really well,” Mayse said. “The moms shared about their personal experiences and I created a closed Facebook group so they could continue to communicate with each other and me.”

They also enjoyed a crock pot meal.

“Each time we will try a different one and they will leave with the recipe,” Mayse said.

A variety of topics will be discussed including: Time management, active parenting techniques, stress management, self-care and more. Programs will be held from 5:30 to 7 p.m. the last Sunday of the month at MSW Solutions / The Mentoring Center, 410 Main St., Second Floor. Scheduled dates are May 31, June 28, July 26, Aug. 30 and Sept. 27.

“We will take some time off for the holidays and then regroup after the first of the year,” Mayse said.

All pregnant and parenting moms are invited to join the group.

“At the first one we had some expecting mothers, some who have toddlers and some who have adult children,” Mayse said. “I believe no matter where we are at in life we can still learn from one another.”

There is no cost to attend Super Moms meetings, but pre-registration is required at least one week prior to each event. Call 740-722-9095. Food will be provided at each meeting, but child care will not. It also is not mandatory to attend all of the meetings.

“I’d love to see mentorships develop from this that extend beyond the once a month meetings,” Mayse said.

Until the next meeting, Mayse suggests moms try some of these ideas to help them deal with stressful days.

  • Prioritize and make time for self care. It’s just as important as feeding and bathing your children. Taking care of yourself physically and mentally will help you take better care of your children.
  • Start the day out with some stretching and remember to take breaks to just breathe or absorb some sunshine.
  • Take even just 10 minutes to do something you enjoy and allow the focus of the day to shift.
  • Create a gratitude journal and write down what worked well today. Mothers tend to be self critical, but this will give you something to look back on and see what is working and make you search for the positive.
