Fishing derby draws hundreds
COSHOCTON – The annual fishing derby held at Lake Park on the first Saturday in May typically draws hundreds of kids of all ages. This year was no exception as families lined the banks of Lake Park to try their luck in catching various species of fish that came from Fender’s Fish Hatchery.
Ralph Dickerson, speaking on behalf of the main event sponsor, the Coshocton County Sportsmen’s Association, said, “We have a lot of people to thank today. The Friends of the Park, Fender’s Fish Hatchery, Lake Park, Buckeye Brine, the Eagles Lodge, the State of Ohio Division of Wildlife and many others. I probably missed some donors so I want to take this opportunity to thank everyone that helped us with this fishing derby. We do it for the kids. We especially want to thank the local Bob Evans today for providing the food.”
Ian McKeever, assistant manager at the Coshocton Bob Evans, said, “We’ve brought hamburger and hot dog buns donated from Nickles Bakery in Navarre, the Sportsmen’s Association donated some of the money for the food and we pitched in where needed. We’re excited about today – we’ve brought a lot of help and will be serving our famous biscuits and gravy along with hot dogs, hamburgers and more.”
McKeever said about Bob Evans, “We’re a family company and we like to be involved in the community. We like to get our name out and show that we’re not just another corporation, we’re here for everyone – we’re part of the community.”
In addition to volunteering their time to help at the event, members of the Sportsmen’s Association rounded up dozens of prizes from businesses and organizations in the community that included fishing poles, bicycles and much more. Prizes were awarded in various age categories for the size of fish caught.
