United Way to host Birthday Bash
COSHOCTON – In 1940, a group of concerned citizens came together to support non-profit agencies who had to spend most of their time fundraising just to make ends meet and had little to no time to devote to their various programs. The Coshocton Community Chest was born with Sam Clow as chairman of the first campaign, which raised $16,000 that was used to fund the entire operating budget for five non-profit agencies.
Now known as United Way of Coshocton County, the organization helps to support 18 partner agencies who, without the support of United Way, couldn’t survive. Not only do they support agencies financially, but they try to give their 18 partner agencies more presence in the community with agency spotlights each month, promoting various agencies on the radio, and featuring upcoming agency fundraisers on their website.
Other than supporting their agencies financially, the United Way creates and maintains community impact initiatives. One that will begin next school year is called Crunch Out Obesity and will be implemented in fourth grade physical education classes.
This year, United Way is celebrating its 75th anniversary in the county. In celebration of its anniversary, United Way is hosting a Birthday Bash on Sunday, June 28 at Lake Park. The community is invited to attend.
“They are the reason we’re here and the reason United Way has been able to grow,” said Lyn Mizer, executive director of United Way. “The community has done a wonderful job supporting us and they’ve been a tremendous support. They’ve been very generous of giving of their time and resources, so we knew we had to include the community in our celebration.”
Events begin at 4:30 p.m. and last until dusk. This family-friendly event has something for everyone including bouncy houses, hula-hoop games, obstacle course, face painting, water balloons, whiffle ball, and a Minute-To-Win-It game. The pool will also be open free of charge from 7 – 9 p.m. There will also be jam sessions throughout the night. In addition to the activities, there will be birthday cake, balloons, and glow jewelry. Everyone is also invited to bring their own picnic. No alcohol, please.
The highlight of the evening will be a laser light show.
“We’re hoping it’s going to be a great display of lights,” said Mizer. “We knew there were going to be fireworks at other events, so we wanted to do something different.”
