Charles L. Rhodes
WARSAW-Charles Lee “Bud” Rhodes 84, of Warsaw, was called home suddenly following an emergency surgery Monday, July 6, 2015 at Knox Community Hospital in Mt. Vernon.
He was born August 26, 1930 in St. Charles, VA to the late Luther and Florence (Green) Rhodes. When he was old enough, Charles worked in the Coal Mines in Virginia until he married his loving wife of 66 years, Nancy Sue (Black) Rhodes, whom he married Nov. 15, 1948; she preceded him in death on Dec. 4, 2014. Together they moved to Mansfield. He worked at Bing’s Furniture and then secured a job at GM, where he worked for 30 years, retiring in 1985. He was a loving husband and father. A devoted Christian with deep rooted values, he served as a Deacon at the Hanna Rd. Church of God, where everyone loved to listen to Charlie sing, testify, and lead prayer. Everyone would always say he sounded like he was preaching as he prayed.
After retiring from GM, he and his wife moved to Warsaw. Charles’ dream was to live down by the Walhonding River where he could spend his retirement years hunting and fishing. He was an avid hunter! Starting at age 8, he spent every single minute he could in the woods or on a river bank bringing home numerous prized deer, turkey, and fish. And we can’t forget his gardening skills, growing as many as 100 tomato plants, making sure he had enough canned goods to share with his big family, friends and neighbors!
He is survived by his five children; Charles Wayne (Ann) Rhodes of Coshocton, Judy (Bill) Young of Mt. Vernon, Linda (Steve) Reynolds of Lucas, Danny (Barb) Rhodes of Mansfield, and Phil Rhodes of Warsaw, ten grandchildren, whom lovingly called him “Gramps” and spent time fishing with him from the river bank, sixteen great-grandchildren, five brothers; Nathaniel Rhodes, Jack Rhodes, Jim “Boge” Rhodes, Robert “Bob” (Jackie) Rhodes and Donnie (Nada) Rhodes, and three sisters; Sue (Ben) Ramirez, Leah Linville and June (Bill) Miller.
In addition to his wife and parents, he was preceded in death by one sister; Opal Lee, and a daughter-in-law, Pat Rhodes.
Funeral services will be held Friday, July 10, 2015 at 1:00 p.m. at the Fischer Funeral Home in Warsaw with Rev. Harold Nickell officiating. Burial will be in the Valley View Cemetery at Warsaw. Visitation is from 11:00 a.m – 1:00 p.m. Friday at the funeral home. www.fischerfuneralhome.com
