Soup’s on
NEW CASTLE – The smell of soup beans being cooked over an open fire in iron kettles drifted through the air Sunday, Aug. 16, at McElwee Park in New Castle. The soup is a highlight of the annual Grand Army of the Republic Bean Dinner, which has now taken place for 148 years. Another highlight, however, for the volunteers who help make the soup is socializing with those who come for the food and entertainment. “I’ve been helping do this for a long time now,” said Ed Moran. “I liked visiting with all the people you see from year to year.” Pictured from left are Moran and Bryan Johnson, who also volunteers at the dinner.
