Mark’s Musings – Aug. 19, 2015
Okay, took a week off to relax and renew and all that stuff. From what I heard from folks, Stan Braxton and the team deserve a big compliment for a nice Canal Festival parade and downtown event to celebrate our community. This along with the annual “Taste of Coshocton” event and the Newcastle GAR bean dinner signifies the end of summer as we know it and the approach of school. Parents are shuddering as they read those words – or perhaps not. Also heard that the annual BPW cake auction with Mary Mason auctioneering drew a nice crowd and raised a nice amount of money for several good causes.
You take some time off and don’t pay attention to the baseball standings – you find out that the Indians are in last place, the Reds are in next to last the Pirates are in second and leading the Cubs in the wild card by 2.5 games. Yes, that is the Cubs. Remember the top two teams play each other in the wildcard game.
According to the polls on HuffingtonPost.com, Trump remains the GOP frontrunner at 24% despite his comments about Megyn Kelly and an “interesting” slew of responses at the first GOP debate. Jeb Bush is second at 10% despite what the pundits said was a rather lackluster performance at the debate. While Bush did not do anything to help himself he did not do anything to hurt himself either and perhaps that was the plan. State of Ohio Governor John Kasich is 10th as of Monday with 3.4% of the polling.
There is an interesting story posted on NFL.com about the Browns. I am sure that the diehard fans – and is there really any other type if you are a Browns fan? – have dissected it multiple times, saved it on all of their devices and perhaps even printed it out and posted it on the bathroom mirror. One playoff game-and no wins-since 1999 results in a lack of confidence about another upcoming season for the Brown and Orange yet when one reads the article – you are left wondering if this season could be different. Let’s hope yes.
And we all know that the preseason rarely shows what a team will do in the regular season. Steeler’s fans better hope not with a 0-2 start. The Bengals rattled off a nice win against the Giants in their first preseason game.
The Buckeyes of course, are a much better bet than any of the three most followed pro teams in our state as the season opener on Labor Day evening looms against Virginia Tech. Make no mistake about it, this season could be one of the best ever for the team from Columbus. I wore my fairly plain Ohio State gray tee shirt with scarlet letters trimmed in white while travelling thru some neighboring states to the south – I could tell people looked at it with awe and perhaps even some envy. I know they weren’t looking at me. It was the shirt. Try it the next time you go out of state. You’ll know.
