Crowd gathers for beagle hunt

WEST LAFAYETTE — Between 1,000 and 1,500 people gathered together to run Beagles in Coshocton’s countryside, enjoy good food and fellowship and take a chance on prizes and raffles worth $62,000.
The Don McVay Sr. Memorial Beagle Hunt sponsored by the Coshocton County Beagle Club and the McVay Family was held Sept. 10-13, at Schumaker Farms.
“I think one of the reasons so many people come is because of the raffle,” said Dave McVay, the event chairman. “People can run their dog and lose, but because of the raffle still go home a winner.”
The hunt is held in memory of Dave’s father Don who was very active in beagle hunts and enjoyed giving back to the sport.
“I was close to Don and enjoy coming,” said Matt Turner of Newark.
He’s been a winner at the event before and at this year’s bench show walked away with first place in the registered division.
“It was a lot of luck, but I also had her in pretty good shape and she’s a nice dog,” Turner said. “She’s actually my buddy’s dog who couldn’t be here, but I raised her and trained her.”
Winning, however, isn’t the only reason he likes the event.
“Look around here,” Turner said. “There are people of all ages – kids, wives, aunts, uncles, cousins – they are all here. This is a great sport. You get to see your buddies and run dogs. I love it all.”
