Mark’s Musings – Sept. 23, 2015
The Pope spoke with the Castro brothers during his three day stop in Cuba during his scheduled visit to the island nation on a visit that will continue on to the United States. This is an historic visit in many ways – including the fact that Pope Francis will meet with President Obama at the White House on Sept. 23, be the first Pope to speak to a joint session of Congress on Sept. 24 and then speak to the UN General Assembly on Sept .25. You can see the complete schedule at www.catholicherald.co.uk. There are many significant stops during the visit including the 9/11 Memorial in New York City and a Catholic school in East Harlem.
The Buckeyes, Browns, Bengals, and even the Steelers were all winners this past weekend. So did the Wolverines and the Spartans. The games in November are looming large for the Buckeyes. Sunday’s biggest news may have been the loss of Tony Romo for up to 8 weeks for the Cowboys and of course, Johnny Manziel’s big TD pass. Baltimore, New Orleans, Seattle and Chicago are all 0-2, which certainly brings some surprises. But the season is long and lots can happen during four months. It was just nice to see the Browns win their season opener.
The Cubs would have to completely unravel (yes, it has happened before) to not make the wildcard one game playoff against the Pirates. The Cardinals are the only team that has clinched as of Monday, Sept. 21. The Indians are still in the running for the wildcard and have a huge series against Minnesota starting on Tuesday, Sept. 22. Then, if that wasn’t enough of a challenge, the Twins come to Cleveland for a series before the season ends at home against the Red Sox. Boston is out of it at this point but that may not mean anything as they can play the spoiler.
The smooth roads are very nice-I only see one small issue that I am not even sure should be divulged at this point. Are we, in fact, driving a tad faster due to the smoothness of said roads? I plead somewhat guilty on this. Can’t-and won’t-speak for anyone else.
With the county fair coming around the corner like a freight train, fall is often cited as the favorite time of year here in Coshocton County. And why not? We certainly get to enjoy a change of seasons, beautiful fall foliage, football and other fall sports, apples and apple cider, hayrides, farm fall foliage tour, Apple Butter Stirrin’ and farmers harvesting a crop of corn and soybeans. The deep green of the fall grass seems to be missing like the rains typically endured in September and October. Let’s hope they (the rains) stay away for the f _ _ r. And gosh, let’s hope that it doesn’t s_ _ w.
Since I did not spell out the word entirely, it does not count as a possible jinxing. Superstitions are just silliness anyway. Was that a black cat I just saw going under a ladder? What does THAT mean?
