COTC celebrates National Surgical Technologist Week
NEWARK – National Surgical Technologist Week is Sept. 20 – 26. Central Ohio Technical College (COTC) is celebrating with students, alumni and others around the country to recognize this growing profession.
The surgical technology program at COTC graduated 23 students from its one-year certificate program last month, and 22 of them are currently enrolled to complete their associate degree in December. Additionally, 20 new students began a cohort this semester.
Surgical technologists serve as an integral part of the surgical team providing surgical care to patients. Surgical technologists work under the supervision of a surgeon to facilitate the safe and effective conduct of surgical procedures. National Surgical Technologist Week was established by the (Association of Surgical Technologist) AST in 1984.
Today there are nearly 100,000 surgical technologists nationwide, working in one of the fastest growing professions in the country. The Bureau of Labor Statistics projects employment of surgical technologists to grow 30 percent through the year 2022, much faster than average.
COTC offers an associate of applied science degree as well as a one-year certificate in surgical technology. Upon successful completion of the program graduates are required to take the AST national certifying examination. As part of the program, students experience a state-of-the-art surgical technology laboratory, exposure to a variety of surgical settings through multiple clinical sites, and excellent job placement rates.
For more information about the surgical technology program, attend an information meeting on Sept. 29, Oct. 21, Nov. 12 or Dec. 10 at COTC’s Newark campus. Register online at http://www.cotc.edu/Academics/Pages/Surgical-Technology-.aspx.
