Mayor’s Promenade announced
COSHOCTON – The public is cordially invited to the Mayor’s Promenade on Sunday, Oct. 18. Mayor Steve Mercer and his wife Sharon will lead local participants, the Canal Court, and more than 60 visiting queens from across the state in his annual stroll through yesteryear. The changing leaves and cooler fall weather will be the perfect backdrop to the historic setting as participants promenade along the towpath, across the site of the old aqueduct, near the locks and basins, toward Roscoe Village.
Pre-registration is encouraged, but not necessary. There is still no fee to be part of the promenade. Check-in and same-day registration begins at 2:30 p.m. outside Lake Park Pavilion and participants will leave for Roscoe Village at 3 p.m. Several long-time participants will be honored and all costumed participants will receive a medal for joining in, as well as complimentary admission into the Apple Butter Stirrin’ Festival.
The list of pre-registered participants at this point, includes some perennial favorites. Three members of the Porteus-Heller-Pyle clan have participated in 42 promenades. The matriarch of the clan, Nancy Porteus, is the creative mind and talented hands behind the costumes. Her sister Mary Lou was on the Canal Queen Court in 1972, and her daughter Angie was the 1985 Canal Princess. Ron Cummings’ participation in the Mayor’s Promenade dates back to the 1970s. Spectators look forward to his unique costumes, which each has a well-researched theme behind it. This year’s costume includes a hand-made gourd puppet. Cummings is proud to work in the heart of our community’s history in the Warehouse building in Roscoe Village.
With this year’s addition of the visiting queens, one of Coshocton’s most distinctive traditions is about to get some extra attention.
