Let’s continue with the positive stuff. I talked to one of the folks from WestRock outside a local bank – I don’t know the guy at all – here’s what he said about the community. “It was like an emergency response team. The community has been great in supporting us.” Maybe that is what you expected someone to say about our community. Maybe it’s not. But that’s what he told me. This is just another terrific example in a long line of positive actions being taken. As one community leader said this week, “As tragic as this is, we have to look at this as an opportunity.”

My sources are telling me that several of the workers have already landed positions elsewhere following the closing of the plant. And others are being sought out because they are skilled, loyal and dedicated workers. Some may end up in Circleville, which just landed a tissue plant. Yes, someone has to make that stuff. The company is called Sofidel, is based in Italy and is family owned. The plant is 1.4 million square feet. You can find out more about the company at www.sofidel.it.

This column is being written on Friday, Nov. 6 as we prepare to go to press with the Nov. 11 issue. We are early due to the Veteran’s Day holiday on Wednesday. In order for our requestors to receive their copy of The Beacon prior to the holiday, the paper will be mailed to arrive in home on Tuesday.

We would be remiss if we did not say thanks to all of the men and women who have served our country in time of war and peace. Here’s to all of the Veteran’s, past, present and future, thank you for your sacrifice.

The cover of this issue of The Beacon signifies another positive. Being named one of Ohio’s “Best Hometowns” means much to our community – especially now. You can find out more by reading the article in this week’s edition.

Here’s another positive – the Ridgewood Generals making the playoffs and hosting a first round home playoff game. Way to go Generals!

Have you heard about the sidewalk projects that are starting to take form in the community? Yep. People are working on this so watch The Beacon for more details as these projects start moving from the drawing board to concrete being poured. This is another positive collaboration between local officials.

I am hearing about a “little” contest between some local Methodist churches and the Christmas Box campaign. Apparently, the three pastors and congregations involved are going to treat the winner to a dinner. There is some discussion ongoing about the size or number of the folks that can be treated – depending on the church. I’m just going to throw this out there so it is a known fact – I like custard pie, homemade noodles and a nice sloppy joe sandwich or bowl of chili to top it off. I can taste it now.

Looks like I may need to start rooting for the Bengals.
