COSHOCTON – Being removed unexpectedly from your home and placed in a room with a bunch of strangers can make anyone anxious including cats like Lexi who is currently residing at Tractor Supply.

There are nine cages in the back of Tractor Supply where Rachael Selders from the Coshocton County Animal Shelter places cats that might have a hard time adjusting to life at the shelter.

“I do have a couple of kittens, but I try to pull adults because they don’t go as quick at the shelter,” Selders said. “Some of them like Lexi get depressed there and get sick from being depressed.”

She is doing her best to nurse Lexi back to health and show her and the other cats at Tractor Supply lots of love and attention.

“I interact with each of them,” Selders said. “I let them run and play and try to socialize them.”

The location of the cat cages at the store gives her the opportunity to block off an area for them to explore and for her to bring her dog in so they can get use to other animals. Each cage also has on it a card with information on the cat and the shelter’s number so people can learn more about them when Selders isn’t there.

“Anyone interested in a cat can call me at the shelter and I can meet them here after the shelter closes,” Selders. “Coming to the shelter can be overwhelming. We’ve had people say they can’t just pick one cat when we have 125 running around that need a home.”

The cats at Tractor Supply can be adopted for $30. Selders said they are all just looking for a loving home, but would simply just never make it at the shelter.

“They are just all too shy and backwards just like Scooter here,” she said. “I had to swoop in and love all over him.”

Tractor Supply has made the cages available for adoptable cats for the past 12 years, but Selders just recently took over the project.
