Apple Butter, fall foliage, football and more can only mean one thing. . . the election is only a few weeks away. Fooled you that time. For me, and I imagine many of our Beacon readers, it won’t arrive soon enough. The mudslinging I can do without. And as all of you know, The Beacon focuses on the positive events in our community and certainly the right to vote is a positive. Let’s use it. The nice thing about exercising your right to vote is that regardless of whether your candidate wins or loses you at least had some influence on the outcome.

There is a significant amount of negative campaigning this year. The television ads, direct mailings, etc., are more directed at telling us what the other candidate is for or against than what they stand for themselves. I would prefer to hear what THE candidate stands for, versus telling me what or whom their opponent is aligned with. But that is my opinion.

The Buckeyes are proving their mettle in a season that will be triumphant but will not have a rosy ending so to speak. But for Buckeye fans, beating the team up north and perhaps finishing the first season under new head coach Urban Meyer undefeated will be rosy indeed. The Nittany Lions are next on the ticket.

Local high school football teams are nearing the end of this year with the annual end of season skirmishes between the Black Bears and Coshocton and then Ridgewood and Newcomerstown coming on Oct. 26. Good luck to all teams, coaches, students, parents, bands, cheerleaders and everyone involved with their efforts to build character, have fun and learn about teamwork.

It takes a lot of volunteers to make the Roscoe Village Apple Butter Stirrin’ happen and once again they have done a terrific job. That weather goat kind of let us down on Saturday but outperformed on Sunday. Maybe it’s time to change goats, huh Jim?

The Farm Foliage Tour is another example of community volunteer spirit coming together to provide Coshocton County and surrounding areas with an opportunity to explore the beautiful countryside, the colors of fall and agriculture. This is important and everyone that helps with this event deserves our appreciation. Thanks.

When you read this copy of The Beacon our week of Indian summer could be at its height of glory. At least the weather forecast for this week seems to indicate that. Enjoy. And those lower gas prices.
