Will he or won’t he? The question on everyone’s mind, of course, or at least a great many of us, is will Payton Manning announce his retirement from the NFL after staging a comeback from injury to lead the Denver Broncos to their third Super Bowl championship. The pundits seem to think so. And Manning goes down in the record books as the only Super Bowl quarterback to win with two different franchises. Fitting for what is certainly one of the NFL’s most prestigious quarterbacks and a certain Hall of Famer.
As far as the game was concerned, lots of good defense and a Broncos strategy that took few chances on offense, instead relying on the defense to win the championship. And they did. Although I felt that Carolina could have won the game with just a couple of breaks right up until those fatal mistakes in the fourth quarter. Cam Newton looked shocked a few times with the speed and intensity of the Broncos defense. And I think many people had that same opinion.
Planning to go? Why, to the often called “winter fair of Coshocton County”, that is, the annual Open House at the Coshocton County Career Center this Thursday. Lots of local businesses and organizations will be displaying their wares and services for several hundred in the community that attend. Give it a go!
This weekend brings another event that is popular with everyone that has a sweet tooth. And who doesn’t? The annual Chocolate Extravaganza is also at the Career Center on Saturday from 3 to 5 pm and the Sweetheart Big Band Dance at Lake Park kicks off at 8 p.m. that night. You can read more about it in this week’s issue of The Beacon.
In a story that surely got lost in all of the Super Bowl weekend hype and the buzz about the New Hampshire primary, the North Koreans launched a long range missile over the weekend that was more about their ability to launch just such a rocket versus the capability of putting a satellite into orbit. The weight of the satellite is presumed to be too small to be of any significance.
The bigger part of the story is that this type of missile is banned and thus, the U.N. has strongly condemned the launch by the North Korea. It is a story worth following.
The predicted winners of the New Hampshire primary – which is Tuesday, Feb. 9, are Trump and Sanders.
Our community will greatly miss Cheryl Triplitt Wantuck who passed away this past weekend. Her efforts to launch the Our Town Coshocton organization started slowly, then picked up steam and all indications are that this group will be a catalyst for positive improvement in our community. Thanks Cheryl for everything you did and for having the persistence to keep going in the face of big odds. One person often does, and can, make a difference.
Our office folks seem to agree that the best commercial of the Super Bowl was the Doritos ultrasound one. Now we all know that babies don’t have teeth to eat any of the popular snacks so it was a bit far-fetched to be sure. All of the other spots were believable. Sure.
