Sixth graders get introduced to careers
COSHOCTON – John Thompson enjoyed the chance to use a professional photographer’s camera, but what he was really looking forward to was visiting the emergency medical service station at career day.
“It was interesting (using the camera), but what I want to be is an EMT,” said the Ridgewood Middle School sixth grader.
He and his classmates spent Monday morning, March 7 learning about different careers from volunteers from the community and the Career Center who setup in the gym and just outside of it to share their knowledge with the students.
“When I talk to the students about careers I tell them I wish I had this experience and got hands on lessons on different careers,” said Leslie Dulgar, guidance counselor at the school. “It’s so important that they know what they want to do when they get older. This way they can take their interests and try to find jobs that match them. It’s important to love what you do.”
The students were able to spend seven to eight minutes at each station to learn about the field and training necessary to work in it.
“We want to get them thinking about what’s out there because you never know what might interest you and what you will want to explore a little more,” Dulgar said.
She appreciated Coshocton C.A.R.E.S. assisting with setting up the career day and all those who gave up their morning to share information about their fields with the students.
“We had a lot of fields represented today,” Dulgar said
