Area youth enjoy Special Olympics Track and Field Day
COSHOCTON – Ashton Buckohr just couldn’t walk away from the cornhole game at the 22nd annual Kiwanis Special Olympics Track & Field Day. His enthusiasm for the game had all those around him smiling.
“This is a good opportunity for him to get involved in sports and I like seeing how happy he is,” said Ashley Buckohr, Ashton’s mom.
Ashton is a preschooler from Newcomerstown and Ashley said this was their first time at Kids America where the track and field day was held on March 17.
“This is a beautiful facility,” Ashley said.
Kids America was filled with students from Newcomerstown, Hopewell, Ridgewood, River View and Coshocton who participated in track events, a hoop shoot, cornhole, football toss and soccer shootout. Assisting them at each station were volunteers from Coshocton High School’s Key Club.
“We have about 85 volunteers and they have been a lot of help this year,” said Toby Collins, Coshocton County Board of DD director of recreation and Special Olympics coordinator.
This was Hailey Myers and Alexia Rose’s first time volunteering at the event.
“Everyone is so sweet and they have the biggest hearts,” Myers said.
She and Rose are both in the 10th grade at CHS.
“I’ve liked everything about being here especially helping them (the participants) out,” Rose said.
