Gibbss encouraging women to pursue STEM careers
WASHINGTON, DC – Several bills passed by the House today will expand opportunities for female students to study science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) through mentoring and summer programs. H.R. 4755, The Inspiring the Next Space Pioneers, Innovators, Researchers, and Explorers Women Act (INSPIRE Act) requires NASA to utilize several programs for students to encourage women to pursue careers in math and science.
Additionally, H.R. 4742 the Promoting Women in Entrepreneurship Act, will allow the National Science Foundation (NSF) to use existing programs to encourage and recruit women into STEM fields of study.
After the bills passed with overwhelming bipartisan support, Congressman Bob Gibbs released the following statement:
“The opportunities for an education or career in a STEM field are increasing every year. While more than fifty percent of the U.S. workforce is comprised of women, less than twenty-five percent of the STEM workforce is female. This legislation will ensure that NASA and the NSF use the appropriate pre-existing outreach programs to increase participation among women in STEM education and careers in science and research. By encouraging more students, especially young women, to pursue these fields of study, the United States can continue to be the global center of STEM education and the tech-driven economy.”
