Fools on the Roof raises money for a good cause
COSHOCTON – Dana Walsh and her coworker Kaycee Newell were a little bit nervous about going up on the roof at Hopewell Industries, but they didn’t let that stop them from helping a good cause.
Fools on the Roof, held April 1, was a fundraiser for the American Cancer Society’s Relay for Life, an event that Walsh is very passionate about.
“My daughter, Kendra Walsh, had cancer twice as a toddler, but is doing great now,” she said. “She is a senior at River View and getting ready to graduate in May. Without the community’s support, family support, faith and friends I don’t know if we would have gotten through that.”
Both Dana and Newell are employees of The Home Loan Savings Bank.
“I used to have team for Kendra, but when I started working for Home Loan I joined their team,” Dana said. “I’ve been involved with Relay for 18 years now. My first team was when Kendra was diagnosed at the age of 10 months. We really appreciate Home Loan allowing us the time away to do this and their support of Relay for Life.”
Dana and Newell were lifted up onto the roof by a bucket truck from A-1 Tree Experts.
“We’ve been involved with this from the beginning,” said Scot Householder, owner of A-1. “We donate our time because my grandpa died of cancer when I was 9. I’ve hated cancer ever since then.”
His late brother Mike Householder was the original organizer of Fools on the Roof.
“It’s generated nine to 10 thousand dollars for six years now,” Scot said.
This year’s event was organized by Kyle Libby State Farm and Pablo Neal and music was provided by Dave Lear and Mary Countryman’s deejay service.
“I donate my time for this every year,” Lear said. “I use it as a dress rehearsal for Relay for Life since I run the sound system there.”
Participants were treated to breakfast from Tim Hortons and lunch from Papa John’s and each of them were asked to try and raise at least $500 before getting off the roof.
